The Division of General Internal Medicine and Public Health at Vanderbilt, under the direction of Robert S. Dittus, MD, MPH, offers a full range of clinical, educational and research programs. The division's thirty faculty provide ambulatory, inpatient, and consultative care at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and at affiliated locations throughout the Nashville metropolitan area.

In addition to its main focus on primary care internal medicine, several additional academic sections are housed within the division including the Medicine-Pediatrics Section, Geriatrics Section, and the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Section. The division provides leadership to many teaching programs within the medical school, internal medicine residency program, and the division's three fellowship training programs. Research programs include health services research, clinical epidemiology and outcomes research, quality improvement in health care, drug addictions, pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics, chronic disease management, and innovations in medical education.

The division is actively expanding its research efforts in health services research and clinical epidemiology, chronic disease management, quality improvement, and geriatrics.
