John S. Sergent, M.D.

Dr. John SergentJohn Sergent is Vice Chair for Education and Residency Program Director in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University. He began serving in this capacity in 2003.

After his fellowship training at The Hospital for Special Surgery/Cornell Medical Center he returned to Vanderbilt where he has held a number of administrative and academic positions. He was the medical center’s first Chief Medical Officer, serving in that capacity from 1995-2003.

He is a past President of the American College of Rheumatology. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the American Board of Internal Medicine and was Chairman of the Subspecialty Board on Rheumatology. In addition to serving as an associate editor of the sixth edition of the Textbook of Rheumatology, Dr. Sergent is the former editor-in-chief of the Year Book of Rheumatology and of the Bulletin on the Rheumatic Diseases. He is also on the editorial board of The Pharos, and for over a decade has been a regular columnist for the Nashville Tennessean.
