Guidelines for contacting attending physicians

Residents are encouraged to contact their attending physician at any time they have issues they would like to discuss.  However, it is mandatory that the attending be contacted in the following circumstances:

1. Rapid response call

2. Need to consider transfer to a higher level of care

3. Recommendation from a consultant that the patient needs an urgent or emergent invasive procedure

4. Death of a patient, whether expected or not

5. A medical error that had any adverse consequences for the patient
