Judd Heideman, M.D.

Brief Description: Judd was born in Montgomery, Alabama (let’s go ahead and get this straight – WAR EAGLE!) but moved to the Tar Heel State in sixth grade, where he rather quickly found a new love for college basketball. He was proud to attend UNC-Chapel Hill for undergrad and double majored in biology and Hispanic linguistics. While at Chapel Hill, he enjoyed volunteering with the UNC Center for Latino Health, working as a tutor with UNC Disability Services, storming Franklin Street after every victory over Duke and national championship, and painting himself Carolina blue for just about every televised UNC football game. At UNC he also met his now-wife, who as it turns out grew up in a neighborhood just a few miles away from his parent’s home in Charlotte. In between undergrad and medical school, he worked for the UNC Hospitals Patient Relations Department. This experience provided many answers to the medical school interview prompt “Tell me about an awkward or difficult conversation you had with another person and what you learned to do better.” He was blessed with the opportunity to attend UNC for medical school, during which he enjoyed representing his classmates in student government, serving the local Latino community through an Albert Schweitzer fellowship, and of course celebrating another men’s basketball national championship. He completed two of his four years at UNC’s partner campus in Charlotte with Carolinas HealthCare System, where he appreciated having a longitudinal curriculum and early exposure to critical care medicine. While Judd and his wife have cherished their memories in North Carolina, nothing compared to the joy they experienced on Match Day when they discovered Judd matched at Vanderbilt for residency. Judd greatly looks forward to exploring the endless opportunities as a Commodore, working with the incredible faculty and residents at Vanderbilt and the VA, finding some new boots for the honky-tonks, and bringing on the hot chicken challenge! He also cannot wait to find some new running trails with his wife and rescue pup Lasso. So then how do you find Judd on the wards, you ask? Simple: look for the Carolina bow tie. Member of AOA.
